“Mo”–short form of “model”–has become a popular suffix. Attaching it to the concept of MaD, cultural critic LEUNG Man-tao will share his views on “make a difference” and exemplariness. A tribute to MaD models across time who have changed our world for the better.

About this Talk
LEUNG Man-tao's line up of MaD models starts with CHAN King-fai, one notable young advocate for a civic society. Coincidentally, LEUNG also knows CHAN’s teacher Ricky YEUNG, who was a radical artist when he was younger. LEUNG speaks of his respect of Yeung. It takes a lot of patience and effort for a teacher to groom a student like CHAN. When YEUNG taught CHAN, he might not even know that he would become who he is today. So often, what happens may not have been planned. But small things may turn out to be something great.LEUNG goes on with Chinese artist AI Weiwei, who used his own money to investigate into student casualties in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. AI published the collected names and numerous articles documenting the investigation on his blog. The point about AI, as well as Aung San Suu Kyi whom LEUNG subsequently talks about, is the meaning of failure/success. AI's blog was eventually shut down. Aung San Suu Kyi has little impact on the actual situation in Burma. They may as well be considered "failures". But to LEUNG, what they inspire ascertains their success. They made a difference with compassion, and compassion makes them different.
