Enabling Enterprise

Have you got an idea to make the world better but don’t know how to put it into action?

On August 20 to 21, about 60 young people joined the two-day workshop titled “Social Innovation 101” to learn the method of putting their ideas into practice.

Cynthia SHANMUGALINGAM and Louise PULFORD from Global Innovation Academy led a couple exercises about reframing our questions – after all, we have to understand clearly want caused the problems or what stand in the way in order to come up with an answer that hit the core of the issue.

During the workshop, we also had the opportunity to hear a young social entrepreneur from London about his work. Tom RAVENSCROFT had a wonderful story to tell. A graduate of Oxford University, he became a teacher in a rather challenging school in East London. Realizing that many students in the country was in strong need of employable skills, he founded Enabling Enterprise to help teachers design curriculum that equipped with students with the ability to work as a team, to organize themselves and to present their ideas. Enabling Enterprise is now reaching 11,000 students in 80 schools.

What is social innovation? To Tom, it is to come up with a creative solution after identifying a problem.

Here’re some of the very touching points for sharing:

* It is important to align your ideas with the needs of your target groups.

* Even if you’re not an idea person, you may still do social innovation. You can support others to work out the ideas. Remember, it’s not about you, but about helping others to meet the social mission.

* There’ll be obstacles along the way, but you just have to believe in the values of your work. Remember:

If you are have the imagination to do it, the intelligence to make realistic plans, the passion and courage to see it till the end, you will overcome the challenges!

Changes are gradually made in the Mainland!

Not only young people in Hong Kong have started their own social ventures under “Change in Action” initiated by MaD, youngsters in the Mainland are using their creativity to launch projects that make an impact in their community.

Science Camp for Kids
Founded by a group of science lovers, Science Camp for Kids wanted to make science books more children-friendly with a view to make science more popular. They also want to provide visually-challenged people audio books. Now they have started a bookcrossing project to collect children science book.

This past weekend about 100 MaDees joined our “MaD x DESIGN.LIVES” workshops and had a good time brainstorming creative ideas to make lives better for everyone.

As a highlight of “MaD Good Lab”, the two-day workshop was led by Dr Yanki LEE (Royal College of Art, London) and Dr HO Kwok-leung (Hong Kong Polytechnic University). Through a series of interactive exercises and creative training, the participants came up with ideas that tackle various concerns, such as using body movement to create a visual experience that remind subway passengers of the beautiful outdoor environment; learning folk dances from Thai maids hanging out in the park and teaching them modern dance in return; bringing smiles to people in the community with different kinds of tricks in exchange of a hug or a buck, encouraging people to give their seats to those in need by holding handmade signs in the subway. Though the ideas are still rather preliminary, they are an important step to making life beautiful. The teams even went to the community to test their ideas.

In the next two months, the teams will keep on improving their plans and make them a reality. Stay tuned for our updates!

Everyone in the team laughed their souls out doing laughter yoga with Yanki.

Participants teamed up to brainstormed ideas to do GOOD.

Yanki cites examples of inclusive design from all over the world to stimulate the imagination of the participants.
